"Good work  gets good clients"

Throughout the year, we are set to have some guest speakers coming in to do talks. These will be from people currently working in industry that have come from various backgrounds, and that have worked in local, national and international agencies. The purpose of these is to give us some advice when creating our work, and also when leaving college as they have obviously been through it all and know what the agencies are looking for in new designers,

The first of these talks was from Founded, a design agency based here in the north east of England that have worked on projects for clients such as the BALTIC.

Anthony began by telling us about his background, explaining that he did not come from a design background. Instead, he studied for a business degree and then from there went and worked at an agency as an accounts manager. From here he began getting more involved in the design process and eventually moved to become a designer.

Founded as an agency don't advertise themselves, but instead clients approach them about work. If a project is not suited to their style of work however they will turn down the work. Their ethos in design is to look after clients, and in turn they look after you. People move on however if you look after clients and build up a good relationship with them they will take you with them. As an agency, Founded have a core team of six designers, and in the last four years have had a turnover of two staff. People like to stay there, and this helps to create a close knit team where people want to work and stay there.

Some great pieces of advice that came from the talk were to keep up on modern trends, looking constantly at magazines and websites to stay up to date with what is happening. As well as this, you should constantly compare yourself to the work of others, although you shouldn't hate people better than you and instead you should work with them.Widen your horizons, take influence from all over, look at blogs to do with fashion, architecture, interior design etc.
