808s & Heartbreak - Kanye West

Kaws is one of my favourite artists because of his unorthodox style of work and the way that he has an experimental approach, moving between the different styles of commercial and street art. With humble roots as an artist in Brooklyn, Kaws quickly made a name for himself defacing the billboards and bus shelter ads of all of the major fashion labels of the 90's with his now infamous character. Now, Kaws has been commissioned to create work for some of the largest brands such as Vans and Marc Jacobs as well as creating the album artwork for Kanye Wests 2008 album release 808s & Heartbreak.

The thing that I admire about the way Kaws goes about his work is the way that he got his work out there by using well known ads of the time and manipulating them to incorporate his artwork. This is something that I am going to look to do with my work as it is an alternative way to get your work seen, however I will not be just applying it to adverts, although the thought of manipulating popular culture is something that I like the idea of.

One of my favourite adverts that Kaws has created. As you can see he was used a Calvin Klein advert and added in his recognisable figure. What stands out to me the most about this is the way that the colour compliments the product in the actual ad, and also how it stands out from the black and white photography.
